DIY Digitization Lab
The DIY Digitization Lab is a self-service digitization space for scanning print-based materials. It is currently located on the 3rd floor of the Regenstein Library near the Microforms. The Digitization Lab is open by appointment only, with reservable appointment times available on Monday and Tuesday. If you need to schedule a consultation, orientation, or digitization time on another day of the week, please contact Taylor Faires, the Digital Scholarship Librarian.
The Digitization Lab is a part of the Center for Digital Scholarship, which provides consultations and services for digital projects, research data, and scholarly publication. We also connect scholars and students to resources within the Library and on campus.
The self-service lab is available to UChicago students, faculty and staff for scanning text-based materials for digital projects, such as for:
-
text & data mining
-
creating small digital collections & exhibitions
Before using the Digitization Lab, you will need to schedule a consultation with a staff member within the lab. During this consultation, a staff member will ask questions relating to the following topics:
-
Size of project
-
Type of project (ex. Text Data Mining, Digital Collection)
-
Timing restraints
-
Copyright
-
Technical requirements
Not all digitization projects are a good fit for the Digitization Lab such as general scanning projects for personal or classroom use, projects focused on artwork or photographs, projects involving large format 2D materials such as maps, or collections that require preservation quality digitization such as those entering into the Library's digital collections. A staff member is happy to talk through your project to determine if the Digitization Lab is a good fit.
Once you have an approved project, you may schedule an orientation or digitization time by using this form or emailing digitization lab staff. Please note that all submissions to this form must be approved by a staff member. You should receive information within one working day of your submission.
